Dubai is resuming construction of a new terminal at Al Maktoum Airport after years of suspension, anticipating increased visitor numbers.

Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum endorsed the terminal’s designs on Sunday, with an estimated cost of 128 billion dirhams. This aligns with Dubai’s ambitious infrastructure plans.

The airport, which hosts the biennial Dubai Air Show, has emerged as a hub for cargo planes and private jets.

Paul Griffiths, CEO of Dubai Airports, aims to persuade airlines to relocate operations to the new terminal in the coming years. This strategic move aligns with Dubai’s vision for aviation growth.

Dubai World Central (DWC), as the airport is also called, “will be five times the size of the current Dubai International Airport, and all operations at Dubai International Airport will be transferred to it in the coming years,” Dubai Media Office said in a post on X.

In 2019, work on Dubai’s Al Maktoum airport was halted, despite its grand plan as one of the world’s largest airports. Its operator envisions an annual capacity exceeding 260 million passengers.

Dubai Airport Terminal’s $35 billion expansion underscores the emirate’s commitment to shaping the future of air travel. The surge in passenger traffic necessitates the pivotal role of the new terminal in Dubai’s infrastructure plans. It aligns with Dubai’s aim to cater to the growing demands of visitors and businesses.
