NEW YORK (AP) — After three years of leadership, Sally Buzbee resigned as executive editor of The Washington Post. The announcement, marking the end of her tenure, was made on Sunday.

Matt Murray, former editor in chief of The Wall Street Journal, will succeed Sally Buzbee. After the fall election, Robert Winnett, deputy editor of the Telegraph Media Group, will assume the role.

Buzbee left The Washington Post without explanation. Upon leaving, she did not provide comment.

The Post announced a new division for engaging audiences with alternative news consumption methods.

In May 2021, The Associated Press’s former top editor, Buzbee, assumed the role of the Post’s top editor. She succeeded Martin Baron, a renowned predecessor, as the Post gained popularity during the Trump administration.

The Washington Post appointed Buzbee as its first female executive editor. Similarly, Jill Abramson briefly held the position at The New York Times from 2011 to 2014.

Despite financial struggles in the news industry, The Washington Post has borne a particularly heavy blow. Under new publisher Will Lewis, the newspaper reported a $77 million loss last year.

“To speak candidly, we are in a hole, and have been for some time,” Lewis said, according to the Post.

Buzbee’s legacy as an editor extends beyond the newsroom, shaping the future of journalism and inspiring the next generation of reporters and editors.
