MOSCOW (Reuters) -Russia’s northern Leningrad military district, bordering NATO members, saw soldiers and sailors participating in drills. The exercises focused on deploying tactical nuclear weapons, seen as a response to increasing tensions with NATO.
The disclosed geography of the nuclear drills appears to broaden, including soldiers from various military districts. These districts cover Russia’s European border, extending from the Arctic Ocean to the Black Sea.
Last month, President Vladimir Putin ordered the drills to take place in the Southern Military district. This decision followed signals from Western officials regarding potential strikes by Ukraine. These strikes were purportedly supported by Western weapons.
Russia’s defense ministry stated that the personnel of the Leningrad Military District missile unit are practicing combat training tasks during the drills.
The preparations included obtaining special training ammunition for the Iskander-M missile system. The launch vehicles were equipped covertly before advancing to the designated position area.
“The crews of navy ships involved in the training will equip sea-based cruise missiles with special mock warheads and enter designated patrol areas,” the ministry said.
The Russian defense ministry released a video of a mobile missile system escorted to a field and a rocket loaded onto a warship.

weapons alongside Belarusian troops.
