BENI, Democratic Republic of Congo (Reuters) -Over 80 fatalities occurred in a boat accident on the River Kwa in Congo’s Mai-Ndombe province. The country’s presidency confirmed the tragedy on Wednesday.

Deadly boat accidents frequently occur in Congo’s waters due to vessels overloading. River travel is prevalent in the forested nation because of few tarred roads.

“The President of the Republic is calling for an investigation into the true causes of this unfortunate incident, to prevent such a disaster from happening again in the future,” the presidency said on X.

The incident was caused by night sailing, Rita Bola Dula, Mai-Ndombe province governor, told Reuters, adding that the investigations continued.

However, the frequent occurrence of deadly accidents highlights the risks faced by passengers and the inadequacies in ensuring their safety.

As details of the Congo boat accident emerge, questions arise regarding the circumstances leading to the tragedy. Initial reports suggest overcrowding and poor conditions on the vessel may have contributed to the disaster. President Tshisekedi’s declaration of the incident emphasizes the gravity of the situation, urging authorities to investigate and take necessary actions to prevent such tragedies in the future.

The aftermath of the Congo boat accident highlights the pressing need for improved maritime safety regulations and enforcement. President Tshisekedi’s acknowledgment of the tragedy signals a commitment to addressing the root causes of such incidents.

Furthermore, support should be extended to the families of the victims, alongside addressing broader water transportation safety issues.
