BEIJING (Reuters) – Tencent is removing from Thursday its hit mobile game “Dungeon & Fighter” (DnF Mobile) from selected Android app stores as its contracts have expired, the company said.
Game developers in China often clash with distributors over revenue sharing, especially as mobile gaming gains dominance in the industry.
Partnerships between developers and Android app stores often dispute the standard 50% revenue share split.
Tencent, China’s largest game developer by revenue, did not specify which app stores would be affected. Local media outlet 21st Century Business Herald reported that the affected app stores include those of Huawei, Oppo and Vivo.
In 2021, Tencent faced a dispute when Huawei removed its mobile games from the app store over revenue sharing.
As Tencent navigates these regulatory challenges, players may experience disruptions in accessing the game, highlighting the complexities of global gaming operations and regulatory compliance.
Tencent’s decision to remove ‘Dungeon & Fighter’ from specific Android app stores underscores the uncertainties in the gaming sector amid regulatory changes. By taking this proactive step, Tencent aims to manage risks and ensure sustained operations in critical markets. Gamers and industry stakeholders are eagerly awaiting updates on the availability of Tencent Dungeon Fighter amidst these regulatory challenges.
