Lilium announced that the Saudi state-owned airline made a firm order for 50 of its electric Vertical Take-Off and Landing (eVTOL) Jets. The order includes an option for an additional 50 jets later.
The first aircraft are expected to join the Saudi state-owned airline’s fleet in 2026.
The deal-signing took place at Lilium’s headquarters outside Munich during a trip by Saudia executives to Germany. The value of the deal was not given.
On Wednesday, Lilium announced delays in testing and parts pushing the first manned flight to early next year.
Lilium is competing in a crowded market for eVTOL vehicles, hoping to replace road trips or short hops by aircraft or helicopters. #LiliumFlyingTaxis
According to Saudia, the air shuttles will transport pilgrims between Mecca and Jeddah. They will also transport guests to major sporting events in Riyadh and tourist destinations.
Moreover, the deal highlights Saudia’s strategic investment in sustainable aviation solutions. By embracing Lilium flying taxis, Saudia aims to enhance transportation efficiency while reducing environmental impact.
