Millions of computers and devices the world over were affected by the outage that was caused by a CrowdStrike update, Microsoft said in a blog post on Saturday. The outage resulted in thousands of flights being cancelled, leaving passengers stranded or grappling with hours of delays.

“We currently estimate that CrowdStrike’s update affected 8.5 million Windows devices, or less than one percent of all Windows machines,” it said in the blog.

“While the percentage was small, the broad economic and societal impacts reflect the use of CrowdStrike by enterprises that run many critical services,” Microsoft said in its blog post.
CrowdStrike has helped develop a solution to accelerate a fix for Microsoft’s Azure infrastructure. Microsoft is working with Amazon Web Services. They are also sharing information with Google Cloud Platform about the industry’s effects.
The air travel industry recovered from the outage that caused thousands of flight cancellations. Passengers faced hours of delays or became stranded.
