BNP Paribas SA has reached an agreement to purchase Fosun International Ltd.’s 9% stake in insurer Ageas for approximately €730 million ($777 million), strengthening the French bank’s ties with its Belgian business partner. BNP Paribas’ insurance division will initially acquire a 4.8% stake in Ageas, with the remainder of the transaction pending regulatory clearance. The bank announced its intention to proceed with the acquisition, as disclosed in a statement released on Sunday. This decision follows reports by Bloomberg News last month about BNP Paribas’ consideration of the deal.
BNP Paribas and Brussels-based Ageas operate a joint venture, AG Insurance, selling various coverage types in Belgium. Additionally, the bank’s Belgian unit distributes Ageas products locally.
“Ageas is pleased to see that BNP Paribas recognizes, through this investment, the value of its partnership for the long term and the potential of the company going forward,” Ageas said in a separate statement.
The deal will have “a marginal impact” of about 2 basis points on BNP Paribas’s CET1 ratio, a key measure of financial strength, the bank said.
