China Coal Expansion

Research published on Thursday detailed a 2% increase in global coal-fired power capacity last year, the highest since 2016. Despite the significant surge in renewable energy, approximately 70 gigawatts (GW) of coal power capacity were added worldwide, with China alone contributing 47.4 GW, according to the annual survey conducted by the US-based think tank Global Energy Monitor (GEM). Additionally, outside China, coal-fired capacity witnessed growth, marking the first increase since 2019. Globally, only 21.1 GW of capacity was decommissioned. The surge in coal power capacity reflects China’s economic objectives. Additionally, it aligns with its energy security strategy. This aligns with China Coal Expansion.

Since the Paris Agreement was signed in 2015, 25 countries have cut coal-fired power capacity, but 35 have increased it, and far more needs to be done, said Flora Champenois, the GEM report’s lead author.

“The world is heading in the right direction in terms of coal’s role in the energy sector, but not quickly enough, and with some risky detours along the way,” Champenois said.

Additionally, China’s emphasis on coal power expansion has significant implications for global efforts to combat climate change and reduce greenhouse gas emissions. The continued reliance on coal exacerbates environmental concerns, contributing to air and water pollution, deforestation, and habitat destruction. Despite international pressure for cleaner energy, China’s focus on coal power highlights the challenge of balancing growth with sustainability. However, transitioning poses complexities. The expansion of coal power capacity in China underscores the urgency of transitioning to renewable energy sources. Consequently, concerted efforts are necessary.
