As he embarks on his European tour, the Chinese Commerce Minister, Wang Wentao, commenced discussions with prominent Chinese automakers BYD and CATL, marking the beginning of his itinerary aimed at addressing the European Union’s ongoing investigation into potential unfair subsidies in China’s electric vehicle (EV) industry. Conducting a roundtable meeting in Paris on Sunday (Apr 7), Wang interacted with representatives from more than 10 enterprises, including Geely, in a bid to tackle concerns and facilitate dialogue on this pertinent issue, as revealed by the commerce ministry on Monday (Apr 8). The Chinese Commerce Minister’s engagement in Europe highlights a proactive stance, fostering innovation and collaboration with European partners. This approach aligns with China’s broader objectives in key industries. Specifically, amidst the European Union’s investigation into potential unfair subsidies in China’s electric vehicle (EV) industry, the Minister’s dialogue with Chinese EV firms sets the stage for constructive discussions and transparent exchanges.

During the meeting, he reiterated Beijing’s stance that Chinese EV firms do not rely on subsidies to gain a competitive advantage and said accusations by the US and Europe of “overcapacity” were groundless.

“China’s electric vehicle companies rely on continuous technological innovation, perfect production and supply chain system and full market competition for rapid development, not relying on subsidies to gain competitive advantage,” Wang said.

Moreover, the visit of the Chinese Commerce Minister to Europe serves as a significant step towards enhancing economic collaboration and fostering dialogue on crucial matters affecting bilateral trade relations. Through interactions with government officials, business leaders, and industry stakeholders, he endeavors to tackle concerns, explore prospects, and outline a path for sustainable economic progress. This diplomatic endeavor not only reinforces diplomatic relations between China and Europe but also establishes the foundation for future partnerships that yield mutual benefits.
