DHAKA/KOLKATA: Late Sunday, severe cyclone Remal made landfall, pounding coastal regions of Bangladesh and India with strong winds and heavy rain. Fallen power poles and uprooted trees left millions without electricity.
The storm swept through coastal areas of Bangladesh’s Mongla port and India’s Sagar Islands with winds reaching 135 kmph. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) reported this information.
The latest weather update from the IMD indicates that the storm will weaken into a cyclone by Monday morning. It will then move northeast and gradually lose strength.
The landfall process began around 9 p.m. local time in India on Sunday and continued for about five hours, the regional meteorological office in Kolkata said.
One person was killed in the major metropolitan city of Kolkata when concrete chunks fell on him during the peak of the storm, police said. Roofs of thatched huts were blown away while mud houses were flattened in the coastal areas of both countries as authorities waited to ascertain the full scale of losses.
Bangladesh and India’s coasts face severe storms due to rising sea temperatures. Remal marks the region’s initial cyclone this year.
Similarly, in India, states like West Bengal and Odisha are bearing the brunt of Cyclone Remal’s fury. Coastal communities are grappling with power cuts and infrastructure damage.
The cyclone has disrupted normal life, leaving people stranded and in need of assistance. Authorities are tirelessly working to restore power and provide relief to those affected by the cyclone.
