El Salvador’s President Nayib Bukele, renowned for his efforts against gangs, began his second term Saturday. He requested “unconditional support” as the government administers tough economic measures, describing them as “bitter medicine” for improvement.

Raising his hand at the National Palace in the capital San Salvador, the 42-year-old took the oath of office in front of a packed crowd of supporters.

With near-total control of parliament and state institutions, he will govern for another five years. His New Ideas party’s dominance in legislative polls followed a popular gang crackdown.

Bukele, self-described as a “cool dictator,” boasts high approval ratings for his tough stance against criminal gangs. His efforts are credited with restoring normalcy to a society weary of violence.

Now he is turning to the economy — comparing his government to a doctor and the country to a sick patient in his inauguration speech and asking Salvadorans to defend his administration’s decisions “tooth and nail” and “without hesitation.”

His popularity led to a near-clean sweep for Bukele’s New Ideas party in the Legislative Assembly. They secured 54 out of 60 seats.

El Salvador’s Bukele’s rhetoric underscores the urgency of implementing robust measures to uplift the economy. Transitioning from rhetoric to policy implementation, El Salvador’s Bukele charts a course aimed at bolstering economic resilience.

Furthermore, he urges Salvadorans to stand behind his administration’s decisions, emphasizing the importance of unity in overcoming economic hurdles.

By prioritizing economic revitalization, El Salvador’s Bukele seeks to instill hope and confidence among the populace.

With resilience and determination, El Salvador’s Bukele vows to navigate the nation through turbulent economic waters.
