Hezbollah leader Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah warned Cyprus against allowing Israel to use its territory to attack Lebanon. He emphasized the potential for a war “without rules or ceilings” in response to any Israeli aggression. Nasrallah’s message underscores the serious implications of regional tensions and the risks of escalation.
Amid the brewing tensions in the Middle East, Cyprus and Israel have a bilateral defence cooperation agreement which has seen both the countries performing joint military exercises in the region.
“Opening Cypriot airports and bases to the Israeli enemy to target Lebanon would mean that the Cypriot government is part of the war, and the resistance will deal with it as part of the war,” Nasrallah said in a televised message on Wednesday.
This is the first time the Hezbollah leader has threatened Cyprus. What makes matters complicated is the fact that Cyprus is a member of the European Union and any conflict with the island nation could drag the regional body into the war.
In response to Nasrallah’s threats, Cyprus must carefully navigate its diplomatic relations with both Israel and Lebanon. The island nation finds itself in a precarious position, balancing international pressures with the need to ensure its security. The specter of a Hezbollah Cyprus attack serves as a stark reminder of the volatile dynamics in the Middle East. The international community must work together to de-escalate tensions and promote stability in the region.
