Iraq Air Strike

According to Iraqi sources, an airstrike on a military base south of Baghdad killed one and wounded six. The base was used by Iraq’s Popular Mobilization Forces (PMF).

The Saudi-owned Al-Hadath network reported significant strikes against Iranian-backed militia targets in Iraq south of Baghdad. The strikes occurred overnight between Friday and Saturday. Moreover, Iraqi media asserted that the attack was perpetrated by multiple drones. These drones targeted a military base owned by the militias. On Saturday, Iraq’s Popular Mobilization Forces declared the explosion at Kalso military base an attack. They attributed the incident to deliberate aggression.

On Saturday, a military statement reported one member killed and eight wounded at Iraq’s Popular Mobilisation Forces command post. The explosion occurred at the Kalso military base, located 50 km south of Baghdad.

During the attack, two separate waves of strikes were conducted, according to reports. Despite this, two PMF sources claimed no casualties but material damage occurred.

“The blast has caused material damage and injuries,” PMF said in a statement, adding that a team was investigating. This is despite a report from two sources at a hospital in the nearby city of Hilla who said that one PMF fighter was killed and six were wounded.

The air strike on the Popular Mobilization Forces post comes at a critical juncture in Iraq’s security landscape. As tensions escalate and regional dynamics evolve, the incident underscores the fragility of the security situation in the country. Furthermore, it highlights the complex interplay of geopolitical interests and the challenges facing Iraq as it seeks to assert its sovereignty and maintain stability amidst regional turmoil. In light of these developments, diplomatic efforts and dialogue remain crucial to de-escalating tensions and fostering a peaceful resolution to the ongoing crisis.
