Egyptian President Anwar el-Sadat and Israeli Prime Minister Menachem Begin sign a historic peace Agreement.
In a historic ceremony at the White House, Egyptian President Anwar el-Sadat and Israeli Prime Minister Menachem Begin signed a groundbreaking peace agreement, marking the end of three decades of hostility between Egypt and Israel and establishing diplomatic and commercial ties.
In a remarkable move for an Arab leader, Sadat journeyed to Jerusalem, Israel, seeking a permanent peace settlement with Egypt’s Jewish neighbor, which had faced decades of conflict. Despite widespread outrage across the Arab world, Sadat persisted in his pursuit of peace with Begin. In September 1978, the two leaders reconvened in the United States, negotiating an agreement with U.S. President Jimmy Carter at Camp David, Maryland. The resulting Camp David Accords marked the first peace agreement between Israel and an Arab neighbor, setting the stage for diplomatic and commercial relations. Seven months later they signed a formal peace treaty.
In recognition of their monumental achievement, Sadat and Begin jointly received the 1978 Nobel Prize for Peace. However, Sadat’s peace efforts were not without controversy. In fact, they faced significant criticism within the Arab world, ultimately resulting in Egypt’s suspension from the Arab League. Tragically, on October 6, 1981, Muslim extremists in Cairo assassinated Sadat. This severe setback, the peace process persisted. In 1982, Egypt formally established diplomatic relations with Israel.
