The Houston Astros beat the San Diego Padres 4-3 in 10 innings Tuesday night, boosting their division lead to five games. However, the post-game focus centered on the ninth inning incident where Jose Altuve got ejected in a dramatic scene. During the intense game between the Astros and Padres, Jose Altuve was unexpectedly ejected following a heated showdown with the umpire. #JoseAltuveEjectedPadres
With the game tied 3-3 and the winning run in scoring position, Altuve grounded out to end the inning. He thought the ball hit his foot and didn’t run to first base.
Houston manager Joe Espada came out to argue the call, to no avail.
The Astros infielder was so ardent in his belief that he went off the reservation and decided to take off his cleat and sock to show the umpire his foot.
The umpire ejected Altuve from the game, and Grae Kessinger replaced him. Altuve hobbled to the dugout. Ironically, Kessinger scored the winning run in the 10th after a Kyle Tucker RBI single.
Prior to his ejection, Altuve was 1-for-5 with two strikeouts.
The Astros’ second baseman is having a stellar season, hitting .301 with a .356 on-base percentage. He has 19 home runs, 89 runs scored, and 63 RBI. Additionally, he has stolen 22 bases, his highest total since 2017. #JoseAltuveEjectedPadres
