In response to Putin’s congratulatory message on Aug. 15, Kim highlighted their enduring bond from World War II. Putin noted that the relationship, forged by Soviet soldiers fighting Japan, still underpins their ties. According to KCNA, this historical connection remains a foundation for their current partnership.

“The friendly feelings of the armies and peoples of the two countries forged and deepened in the bloody struggle against the common enemy serve as a strong driving force for developing … relations of friendship and cooperation into comprehensive strategic partnership and invincible comradeship,” Kim said.

Kim and Putin held a second summit meeting in less than a year in June in Pyongyang, signing a pact on “comprehensive strategic partnership” that includes mutual defence agreement.

South Korea, Ukraine, and the U.S. accused Kim of aiding Russia in the Ukraine war. They claim Kim provides rockets and missiles. In return, Kim receives economic and military support from Moscow.

Kim visited a memorial for Korean revolutionary soldiers who resisted Japan’s 1910-1945 colonial rule. He also visited the Liberation Tower. This site honors Soviet Red Army soldiers.

North Korea’s state founder Kim Il Sung, who is the current leader’s grandfather, was backed by Soviet Union General Secretary Joseph Stalin who declared war against Japan near the end of World War Two. #KimPutinDeeperTies
