Meta Altered Media Policy

Meta, the parent company of Facebook, has implemented its Altered Media Policy, introducing substantial revisions before the impending U.S. elections. Vice President of Content Policy Monika Bickert disclosed that Meta will introduce “Made with AI” labels in May, extending this measure to AI-generated content, including videos, images, and audio across its platforms. This strategic move marks a clear departure from its previous approach, which primarily targeted a limited scope of altered videos.

The implementation of Meta Altered Media Policy highlights Meta’s dedication to transparency in managing manipulated content, marking a shift from a removal-focused approach to one prioritizing openness. Consequently, manipulated content will be accessible, accompanied by detailed information on its creation. Although Meta had previously announced plans to deploy a detection system for images generated by third-party generative AI tools, specifics on the start date were lacking. According to a company spokesperson, “Made with AI” labels will only apply to content shared on Facebook, Instagram, and Threads, with different guidelines governing Meta’s other platforms like WhatsApp and Quest virtual reality headsets.

Furthermore, Meta acknowledges the significance of collaborating with external stakeholders. This includes fact-checkers, researchers, and government agencies, to effectively combat misinformation and manipulated media. By fostering partnerships and sharing insights, Meta aims to strengthen its ability to address emerging threats on its platforms. Through ongoing dialogue and collaboration, Meta adapts policies to evolving challenges and emerging trends in digital content. Ultimately, Meta’s commitment to comprehensive policy revisions underscores dedication to fostering a safer online environment for users worldwide.
