On Wednesday afternoon, the state prosecutor’s office reported that a journalist was killed in Colima.
Patricia Ramirez, known as Paty Bunbury, worked as an entertainment reporter, as reported by the Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ).
This incident marks the second journalist killed in less than a day. Mexico remains one of the deadliest countries for journalists, according to press freedom organizations.
These killings mark the first journalist deaths under President Claudia Sheinbaum. She took office earlier this month and vowed to tackle violence.
On Tuesday, the state prosecutor’s office confirmed that Mauricio Cruz was shot dead in Uruapan, a city in Michoacan. Additionally, another person was injured in the attack but remains unidentified.
Uruapan has gained notoriety for horrific crimes like beheadings, driven by conflicts between drug cartels and law enforcement confrontations.
Cruz’s news outlet, MinutoXMinuto Michoacan, honored the journalist on Facebook by sharing his last live video recorded shortly before he died. #MexicanJournalistsShot
