Rafael Nadal was unable to achieve the fairytale ending his career deserved. The 22-time Grand Slam champion from Spain ended his career with a defeat in the Davis Cup, on an emotional and tearful night in Malaga. The Nadal retirement tribute continued to flow as fans honored his achievements on and off the court. #NadalRetirementTribute
At 38, Nadal’s legs and mind were as strong as ever, but the magic was absent. He lost 6-4, 6-4 to Dutchman Botic van de Zandschulp, marking his final competitive match.
Spain’s rising star, Carlos Alcaraz, leveled the quarterfinal tie by defeating Tallon Griekspoor 7-6(0) 6-3. If Alcaraz and Marcel Granollers had beaten Wesley Koolhof and Van de Zandschulp, Nadal would have had another semifinal chance.
However, it was not meant to be. Koolhof, also retiring, played exceptionally well, leading the Dutch to a 7-6(4), 7-6(3) victory.
Nadal cheered on the Spanish duo from the sidelines, rarely sitting down. Yet, he looked heartbroken as he realized it was all over.
The Mallorcan, who had been part of four Davis Cup-winning teams for Spain, was visibly emotional as the anthem played before the match.
Nadal delivered a heartfelt speech on the court in front of his fans, family, friends, and teammates. Tears flowed again as a video montage of his incredible career played.
“I was just a kid from a small village that had luck because my uncle was a tennis coach and had a family who supported me,” Nadal said.
“A lot of people work hard but I am one of the lucky ones that life gave me the opportunity to live unforgettable experiences because of tennis. I just want to be remembered as a good person and a kid that followed their dreams.”
Nadal had won 29 of his previous 30 singles matches in the Davis Cup team event, with his only loss coming in 2004. #NadalRetirementTribute
