PANAMA CITY (Reuters) -Two shooters opened fire at a rural branch of the University of Panama on Friday, resulting in one fatality and one injury. Police and university officials are actively investigating the incident.
The unknown gunmen reached the university’s Veraguas regional college, about 155 miles west of the capital. College director Pedro Samaniego reported that the students were first-year agricultural science students.
In a video message, Veraguas police chief Hector Delgado reported that a vehicle stopped, and two individuals emerged, firing shots at a group on campus.
Samaniego said Alvaro Leones suffered mortal wounds, and another student, Anel Terreros, was taken to a hospital.
An investigation has been launched and no arrests have been made, a police source said on condition of anonymity.
Shootings at Panama’s schools or universities are very rare.
The university suspended administrative work and classes, condemning the violence and offering condolences to Leones’ friends and families.
University President Eduardo Flores described Leones as an outstanding member, mourning his tragic loss as irreparable.
