Valderrama said the accident occurred on the Los Libertadores highway in Ayacucho in the south-central Andes and that rescue work was ongoing.

Peru’s ground transportation superintendent SUTRAN stated in a press release that the bus belongs to local company Turismo Molina Union SAC. They have initiated an investigation into the incident.

Company representatives were not immediately available for comment.

Deadly bus accidents are common in Peru, where many busses travel on precarious mountain roads or are driven by inadequately trained drivers. #PeruBusCrash

At least 25 people perished in April when a bus plunged into a river in Peru’s northern Cajamarca region. Last September, another accident in the Anco region claimed the lives of at least 24 people.

In addition to the fatalities, several passengers sustained serious injuries in the Peru bus crash. Emergency responders worked tirelessly to rescue survivors and transport them to nearby hospitals. Families of the victims are mourning their losses, while the nation calls for immediate action to improve transportation safety standards.
