(Reuters) – Qualcomm announced on Monday that it is integrating technology originally designed for laptop chips into its mobile phone chips. This move aims to enhance the chips’ capabilities for generative AI tasks. Moreover, Qualcomm AI chips will power devices from major brands like Samsung, extending their influence in the market. #QualcommAIChips
Qualcomm, based in San Diego, leads the global mobile phone chip market. In 2021, it hired former Apple engineers to create laptop chips. These chips, launched this year, power AI features in Microsoft’s Windows, expanding Qualcomm’s business.
Now, the technology created by that team, branded as “Oryon,” will be included in Qualcomm’s mobile chips for the first time. Additionally, the company has revamped its Snapdragon 8 Elite chip to manage tasks like image and text generation. Qualcomm will provide software developers with additional tools, beyond those in Android, to fully utilize these new chip features.
“AI has been one of those where I think Google is moving fast, but we have our own technology to offer that end developer,” Chris Patrick, Qualcomm’s senior vice president and general manager for mobile handsets, told Reuters.
Qualcomm said Samsung Electronics, Asustek Computer and Xiaomi, among several others, will use the new chip. #QualcommAIChips
