SINGAPORE: Singapore Airlines (SIA) offered $10,000 compensation to passengers with minor injuries. Discussions for higher payouts are ongoing for more severely affected individuals.

During flight SQ321 from London, a 73-year-old British man died. Other passengers and crew suffered severe injuries, including skull, brain, and spine injuries.

The pilots diverted the Boeing 777-300ER to Bangkok with 211 passengers and 18 crew. Injured individuals were then transported to hospitals.

SIA announced Tuesday it sent emails offering $10,000 compensation to passengers with minor injuries.

“For those who sustained more serious injuries… we have invited them to discuss a compensation offer to meet each of their specific circumstances when they feel well and ready to do so,” the airline said.

“Passengers medically assessed as having sustained serious injuries, requiring long-term medical care, and requesting financial assistance are offered an advance payment of $25,000 to address their immediate needs.

“This will be part of the final compensation that these passengers will receive.”

In addition to immediate compensation and support, Singapore Airlines is implementing measures to prevent similar incidents in the future. The airline is enhancing its turbulence detection and avoidance systems, investing in advanced technology and training for flight crews.

Furthermore, Singapore Airlines is reviewing its procedures and protocols for handling turbulence-related incidents to ensure swift and effective responses in the future. By prioritizing safety and continuous improvement, the airline aims to minimize the risk of turbulence-related injuries and enhance the overall travel experience for passengers.
