Bratislava, Slovakia — Slovakia’s Prime Minister Robert Fico sustained critical injuries from a shooting on Wednesday. The incident took place in Handlova, approximately 90 miles from Bratislava, following a government meeting. Reports originated from Fico’s Facebook page and various news agencies.

Slovak Foreign Minister Juraj Blanár labeled it an assassination attempt in a social media post. Authorities detained one suspect at the scene.

Fico was transported by helicopter to a regional hospital as it was deemed to urgent to move him on the ground.

During a parliamentary session, Deputy Speaker Lubos Blaha confirmed the incident, leading to the adjournment of the legislature. The Slovak TASR news agency reported the developments.

Police swiftly sealed off the scene, with images showing officers taking at least one middle-aged man into custody. No reports indicated other suspects at large.

According to the BBC, witnesses reported hearing about four shots, while local media outlets suggested Fico may have been hit in the abdomen. Video clips from the scene depict security personnel rushing the wounded premier into a car before driving away swiftly.

The assassination attempt on the Slovak Prime Minister highlights the fragility of political stability. Leaders worldwide express solidarity and condemn the violence against Fico, reinforcing the importance of protecting democracy and upholding the rule of law.
