Markets Tumble and Fed Scrambles Amid Surging Inflation Fears

Investors, consumers, policymakers, and economists find themselves taken aback by the resilience of price pressures at the outset of 2024. Initially, markets anticipated an accommodating stance from the Fed, poised to implement early and frequent interest rate cuts. However, this outlook has undergone a dramatic shift. Each passing day of this week has brought a barrage of negative economic indicators, underscoring the stark reality of inflation. While Fed officials acknowledged the elevated inflation readings, they refrained from sounding alarm bells, maintaining expectations for rate cuts later in the year. Early data on inflation trends in the first quarter of 2024 has emerged, and the verdict thus far is less than promising.

“Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice, shame on me,” Harvard economist Jason Furman told CNBC this week. “We’ve now had three months in a row of prints coming in above just about what everyone expected. It’s time to change the way we think about things going forward.”

“You can take your pick. There’s a lot of catalysts” for Friday’s sell-off, said market veteran Jim Paulsen, a former strategist and economist with Wells Fargo and other firms who now writes a blog for Substack titled Paulsen Perspectives. “More than anything, this is really down to one thing now, and it’s the Israel-Iran war if that’s going to happen. … It just gives you a great sense of instability.”
