Sweden Iran deal

STOCKHOLM (Reuters) -Sweden and Iran carried out a prisoner exchange on Saturday, officials said. Sweden freed a former Iranian official convicted for his role in a 1980s mass execution, while Iran released two Swedes.

Oman mediated the prisoner swap, as stated by the country’s foreign ministry. The statement underscored Oman’s pivotal role in facilitating the mutual release from Tehran and Stockholm. This agreement reflects diplomatic efforts to peacefully resolve international tensions.

Sweden freed former Iranian official Hamid Noury, convicted for his part in a 1988 mass execution. Iran’s official IRNA news agency published footage of Noury arriving at Tehran’s Mehrabad airport. He was welcomed by his family on a red carpet.

Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson said Johan Floderus and Saeed Azizi were on a plane back to Sweden. Both Swedish citizens had been detained in Iran.

“Kristersson accused Iran of using them both as pawns in a cynical negotiation game to secure the release of Iranian citizen Hamid Noury from prison in Sweden. Noury has been convicted of serious crimes committed in Iran during the 1980s.”

“As prime minister, I hold a special responsibility for the safety of Swedish citizens. Consequently, the government has worked intensively on the issue, collaborating with the Swedish security services who conducted negotiations with Iran.”

The Sweden Iran deal involves the exchange of several prisoners from both countries. Families of the prisoners have expressed relief and joy. Human rights organizations also view this development positively. They believe such exchanges can lead to better treatment of detainees. Moreover, this deal may inspire similar agreements globally.
