Brits have been warned to stay inside as a cloud of corrosive and acidic gas cloud, which can cause serious health problems, engulfs the UK in the early hours of this morning. #UKGasCloud
Weather maps show a huge sulphur dioxide (SO2) cloud from recent volcanic eruptions in Iceland. It is expected to cover the country by 4am.
SO2 is predominantly produced from the combustion of coal or crude oil but volcanoes also produce huge quantities of it when they erupt.
Inhaling the gas can cause symptoms such as a sore throat, coughing, a runny nose, burning eyes, tight lungs and difficulties breathing.
Direct exposure to SO2 is linked to asthma and chronic bronchitis. The SO2 from coal burning during the 1952 London smog caused many respiratory-related deaths.
SO2 can also combine with water vapour in the earth’s atmosphere to form acid rain that can travel large distances.
As the corrosive cloud engulfs the skies, residents are urged to take immediate precautions. First, staying indoors and avoiding outdoor activities are strongly advised. #UKGasCloud
Moreover, the UK gas cloud poses significant risks, especially to those with respiratory conditions. Therefore, wearing masks and using air purifiers can help mitigate exposure. Additionally, authorities continue to monitor the situation closely and provide updates.
