(CNN) — Yemen’s Houthi rebels fired a missile into central Israel on Sunday morning, a rare instance of a missile penetrating far into the country’s territory since its war in Gaza began. The projectile crossed into Israeli territory and fell in an open area in central Israel, with no injuries reported, according to the Israel Defense Forces. The Houthis’ military spokesman confirmed the attack in a video statement on Sunday, claiming that the group used a “new hypersonic ballistic missile” in an attack on Israeli territory.
According to the spokesman, Israel failed to intercept the missile, which traveled over 2,000 kilometers in 11.5 minutes.
He added that Israel should expect more such strikes as the first anniversary of the October 7 attack by Hamas approaches.
Israeli police are collaborating with the bomb squad in the Shfela area, where an interceptor fragment fell. Authorities are isolating the impact site and searching for additional interceptor debris.
Sirens rang across central and northern Israel, including Tel Aviv airport, according to the military and airport spokesperson. Videos on social media showed passengers rushing to find shelter.
