SEOUL, South Korea — North Korean leader Kim Jong Un has regained weight and appears to have obesity-related health problems such as high blood pressure and diabetes, and his officials are looking for new medicines abroad to treat them, South Korea’s spy agency told lawmakers Monday. #KimJongUnHealth
The 40-year-old Kim, known for heavy drinking and smoking, has a family history of heart problems. His father and grandfather, who ruled North Korea, both died from heart issues.
Some observers noted that Kim, who is about 170 cm tall and previously weighed 140 kg, seemed to lose weight in 2021. This weight loss was likely due to changes in his diet. However, recent state media footage shows that he has regained the weight.
On Monday, South Korea’s National Intelligence Service informed lawmakers that Kim is estimated to weigh about 140 kilograms again. The agency also reported that Kim is in a high-risk group for heart disease. This information was shared during a closed-door briefing, according to lawmaker Lee Seong Kweun.
Lee reported that the NIS told lawmakers Kim has shown symptoms of high blood pressure and diabetes since his early 30s. Park Sunwon added that the NIS believes Kim’s obesity is linked to his drinking, smoking, and stress. These health issues have been a concern for North Korean officials.
Lee and Park quoted the NIS, stating that North Korean officials sought new medications abroad for Kim Jong Un health issues. They specifically targeted Kim Jong Un’s suspected high blood pressure and diabetes. #KimJongUnHealth
North Korea is extremely secretive, making it nearly impossible for outsiders to know Kim’s exact health conditions. Additionally, the NIS has a spotty record in confirming developments in North Korea.
